"Shadows Across Glass" from the album The Science of Self-Defeat
Minnesota’s UNDER EDEN brought a great release to the table in 2011 with The Science of Self-Defeat (June 2011, Sleaszy Rider Records).  UNDER EDEN incorporates elements of Scandinavian and Melodic Death, but blossoms from of these influences on The Science of Self-Defeat.  Some Technical Death and Progressive elements move in and out of their newest offering, working song to song as chapters to a novel.  The musicianship of UNDER EDEN is excellent, and the production of the album highlights this synergy well.  The songs fluctuate in style and delivery, which keeps The Science of Self-Defeat unpredictable, yet also progressive and stimulating.  Somewhat overlooked among 2011 releases, UNDER EDEN is a talented act who deliver an album worth a listen.

As underground metal goes, UNDER EDEN embodies the journey well.  Releasing their first demo in early 2003, the original three members of Ryan McAtee (guitars, bass), Christian McAtee (guitars) and Josh Fetzek (drums) were joined by vocalist Eric Thon.  After signing to Greece’s Black Lotus Records in 2004, UNDER EDEN released their full-length debut, The Savage Circle, in 2005.  After Black Lotus closed its doors for good, UNDER EDEN pressed forward, self-releasing the Phoenix on Frozen Wings EP in 2008.  The EP would foreshadow the backbone of The Science of Self-Defeat.  In the midst of some lineup changes, UNDER EDEN managed to persevere, and finally released The Science of Self-Defeat via Greek label Sleaszy Rider Records in July 2011.  As of November 2011, UNDER EDEN is without their bass player Patrick Morris, who departed to focus on his three other bands.

The Science of Self-Defeat is truly worth a listen, and if you happen to be traveling through the Minneapolis area, check out UNDER EDEN’S Facebook page HERE and see if you can catch a show.  The complexity of the band’s music embeds an epically dark atmosphere with ensuing melodic enlightenment.  You really get an accomplished, full metal experience with The Science of Self-Defeat.   I think you will find that UNDER EDEN appeals to a wide audience, yet stays true to the underground.  Check out the stream of “Shadows Across Glass” above, and check out the links below to get a copy of the album and keep up with the latest UNDER EDEN news.
