So I have been listening to KVLT OF HIOB’s Thy Kingly Mask on and off for about two months now, and it absolutely warrants a review. For primal black metal fans, this one has it all. The shrieks, howls and blood-curdling cries are classic, and make up the vast majority of vocals. What makes this album special and unique is the combination of ripping black metal with noise manipulation, and the atmospheric instrumentals the weave in and out of the album’s 10 tracks. To top it off, this is a two-man project; Hvman Antithesis contributes the vocals, while Deathkvlt Prayer performs all instruments.
The album screams desolation and agony. KVLT OF HIOB do well in delivering depressive yet hammering black metal throughout the entire album. What’s more, the ability of the German act to seamlessly move between thunderous black chaos to atmospherics and noise elements is admirable to say the least. The result is a complete package of black art fit for the non-conformist listener.
Torturous themes run throughout ‘Thy Kingly Mask’ starting from the intro of “The Lords Prayer,” the album’s opening track. The sound bites are not overplayed, and definitely add to KVLT OF HIOB’s cult sound. Speaking of “The Lords Prayer,” the guitar trills on the second riff are absolutely evil, and make this tune a true gem. Another track worthy of mention is “Procession of the Burning Eyes,” which is available for streaming below.
Granted, this release won’t be for everyone. If you don’t have an ear for experimental sound, you won’t find this offering all that exciting. But if you have a wide-open listening ear, and appreciate metal that brings out desolate emotions and utter chaos, Thy Kingly Mask is essential listening.
