Belfast’s REX SHACHATH released their debut EP ‘Sepulchral Torment’ a little over a month ago, and I just now got around to checking it out. The EP was released by newcomers Hostile Media out of the UK, and consists of six blistering thrash tracks saturated with old school death metal flavor. The tunes are relentless and the EP; this offering from REX SHACHATH has a good sound that keeps true to the extreme metal underground.
Not unlike most of you, I had no clue who REX SHACHATH was prior to listening in on this EP. I was glad I checked it out, as there are tons of new promos on my plate right now, with reviews for many forthcoming. This may not be the best of the lot, but it has the stuff I tend to dig as it applies to metal. The guitars are pronounced and precise, with fast rhythms and well-placed progressions and transitions. The growls of frontman Dave Connolly rumble throughout the EP, and are a perfect fit for the band’s sound.
REX SHACHATH definitely grabbed my attention with their debut, and it will be interesting to see what happens as the band moves forward to a possible full-length. The straight-up, chaotic metal approach of the band permeates throughout ‘Sepulchral Torment’. No dull moments, no hidden agendas – this is straight up underground straight from Northern Ireland.
REX SHACHATH is:
Eddie West – Bass
Jay Rodgers – Drums
Andrew Pennington – Guitars
Dave Connolly – Vocals
Jonathan Francis – Guitars
